The DHIS2 Annual Conference

In this session, HISP-UiO team will be presenting an overview of DHIS2, including the most recent country-driven improvements.

Supporting innovations and local adaptation is a core feature of DHIS2 as a software platform.  It is also a key strength of (and ongoing challenge for) the DHIS2 community.  In this session we will explore examples of local innovation and how they inform development of the core DHIS2 software platform.  We will also discuss how the global DHIS2 community can continue to work together to more effectively build, maintain, share, and use these innovations.

Many countries now have long-lasting DHIS2 implementations and have taken strong local ownership over development, maintenance and innovation. In this session we will learn from some of these countries with a specific focus on how they have approached core team capacity building, system governance and local ownership.

DHIS2 is often a major system in a country health information system architecture.  But it is rarely the only system.  In this session we will reflect on country experiences from Norway, Kenya and Sri Lanka on how DHIS2 has been integrated into the broader architecture.  Not just at a technical level, but also how integation processes have been driven by the information needs of users.

DHIS2 is well established in the health domain, including as a national-scale HMIS in nearly 70 countries. The global response to the COVID-19 pandemic showed how countries can leverage existing DHIS2 capacity and technology to respond to new challenges, as countries across the globe rapidly scaled their DHIS2 platforms for pandemic response. Many countries are now using this opportunity to catalyze the use of DHIS2 beyond the COVID-19 health emergency -- including establishing electronic registries for routine immunization, scaling up coverage of DHIS2 to unreached facilities, and strengthening case-based surveillance for other diseases. In addition, countries are exploring the use of DHIS2 in sectors such as education, agriculture, and more as a platform for e-governance. This session dives into country perspectives, lessons learned, local innovation and capacity strengthening from DHIS2 implementation before and during COVID-19 can be taken forward to strengthen information architecture with DHIS2, for health and beyond.
